  4. Toney a 'man for the big occasions'published at 16:31 18 June

    16:31 18 June

    BBC Sounds

Brentford manager Thomas Frank has been talking about England striker Ivan Toney on the Football Daily podcast.

Here's what he has to say: "Very very pleased [for Toney]. It's obviously been a very tough year for him in many ways, it is what it is and he moved past that. But he worked very very hard to, first and foremost, get his England cap and debut and then hopefully get called up again.

"He got a well deserved call up for the Euros. I think he had a fine last part of the season, 16, 17 games. He hit the ground running when he came back, little bit unlucky with the injury and then at the end of the season, I know he didn't score but he had some high level performances in my opinion.

"Plus going into a tournament, you also need to have different weapons and I think Ivan is a different weapon England is going to need if they want to go all the way.

"I think in the way he is playing, it is quite similar to Harry Kane. He likes to drop deep, he's very good at linking up and he's a very good striker in the box. He is also a man for the big occasions."

  5. Irreplaceable or burden? Ronaldo debate sweeps Portugalpublished at 16:27 18 June

    16:27 18 June

Portugal v Czech Republic (20:00 BST)

    Marcus Alves
    BBC Sport

Bernardo Silva could not help but laugh when he heard the question about one of the biggest elephants in the room in Portugal.

“In the national team, when you’re all listening to the pre-match team talk, do you accept the tactical instructions right away or sometimes react like, ‘Ronaldo, man, can’t it be another way?’” asked Ricardo Araujo Pereira, a famous comedian and writer, during a show in March.

It was obviously a joke – and the Manchester City midfielder promptly denied that Ronaldo is the one giving orders – but such is the forward’s power within the dressing room that many in the country assume it to be true.

Although he was expected to retire from international football after the last World Cup, the Portugal legend remains a huge influence and will play at a record sixth European Championship this summer in Germany.

“I faced Ronaldo while coaching Everton in 2013,” Portugal manager Roberto Martinez told Canal 11. “For most players, when the body starts failing, the head accepts it. In his case, it seems to be the opposite. The body will only stop when the head says it has to stop.

“It’s incredible when a player of his age has the habits and the desire of an 18-year-old. He has an elite-level mindset and no limits. He’s been with the national team for 20 years now. That’s unique.”

  6. Dias on 'inspirational' Ronaldopublished at 16:25 18 June

    16:25 18 June

Portugal v Czech Republic (20:00 BST)

    Gary Rose
    BBC Sport

Portugal defender Ruben Dias described Cristiano Ronaldo as an "inspiration" as he prepares to make history by appearing in a sixth European Championship.

The veteran forward first played at a Euros in 2004 and has scored in every edition since.

Should he score in Germany this summer he will also become the tournament's oldest-ever scorer.

Portugal begin their Euro 2024 campaign in Group F against 1996 finalists the Czech Republic at Leipzig's Red Bull Arena.

Asked about what it means to see Ronaldo prepare to lead his country at Euro 2024 at the age of 39, Manchester City defender Dias said: "It represents inspiration, everything and anything. It represents what you can dream and achieve.

"It's a pleasure to have him with us. Him being with us at this moment in his career represents that he wants to be here with us, he will be here until the end. He's our captain."

As a football team, you have achieved something special when an impromptu parade and celebration in the centre of your capital city is organised at 2am.

Those were the scenes in Georgia, after the national team beat Greece on penalties to qualify for Euro 2024 – their first major senior tournament.

“Within about an hour [of full-time] we were told 'get on the coach, we are going to do a victory parade through Tbilisi',” assistant manager David Webb tells BBC Sport.

“I’ve never seen anything like it - the streets were lit up with fans. A drive that usually takes 10 minutes took about an hour to get into the centre. Then we were on Freedom Square, it was incredible.”

  12. 'The quality of mask is very important'published at 16:09 18 June

    16:09 18 June

    BBC Sport

Former Chelsea club and first team doctor Dr David Porter on deciding on the type of mask to get for players when suffering facial injuries following Kylian Mbappe breaking his nose: "We had quite a few nasal and facial fracturesduring my time at Chelsea Football Club. I think the first thing that you haveto do is think about the best quality masks that you can get. There are anumber of different specialist clinics around Europe and the UK and there aresome absolutely amazing pre-eminent professors of ear, nose and throat surgery, both here in the UK and elsewhere in Europe.

"We used a clinic here in the UKand we also used one in Italy in Milan at the time. I think what you're lookingfor is the highest standard of material. So, you're looking for a carbon fibremask. Obviously, it's lightweight, but it's rigid, it's able to take a lot offorce. I think those are the most important factors.

"Normally the players is taken into oneof these sort of clinics. They do quite a lot of facial analysis. They doparticular scans, they may do CT scans and they do 3D modelling of that player'sface. They then build the scaffold of the mask around that. And so it is verybespoken to the individual player."
